Integrating Te Whare Tapa Whā at Petersgate

Petersgate doesn’t just provide counselling services for mental health. Our counsellors also focus on the person's physical health, their social health and their spiritual health. That's because we recognise that well-being is not simply the absence of illness but a balanced and interconnected state across multiple aspects of a person’s life.

Petersgate counsellors focus on Taha Hinengaro, mental and emotional well-being. This acknowledges the importance of mental clarity, emotional balance, and self-awareness. It is the mental processes used to make sense of our world, including our thoughts, feelings, and psychological resilience.

Petersgate counsellors also focus on Taha Tinana which highlights the importance of the physical body in overall well-being. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body and mind, recognizing that physical health is foundational to good mental health.

Petersgate counsellors focus on Taha Whānau which underscores the significance of family, relationships, and community in an individual’s well-being. For Māori, whānau (family) is a broad term that not only includes immediate family members but also extended family and the wider community. This pillar emphasizes the importance of social support and interconnectedness.

Petersgate counsellors also focus on Taha Wairua which emphasizes the importance of spiritual well-being, which may or may not necessarily align with traditional religious beliefs but can involve a sense of purpose, connection to the universe, and alignment with one’s values. For Māori, this is often closely connected to whakapapa (genealogy), the environment, and ancestral roots.

Te Whare Tapa Whā provides a powerful framework for understanding well-being as a holistic and interconnected concept. By integrating these four pillars—taha wairua, taha hinengaro, taha tinana, and taha whānau—into daily counselling practice, Petersgate can create a more inclusive and effective therapeutic environment. This holistic approach recognizes that mental health is not simply an individual experience but one that is deeply influenced by spiritual, physical, and social factors.

By considering each pillar of well-being, Petersgate counsellors empower clients to achieve a more balanced, integrated state of health that supports their journey toward healing and personal growth.
